Our Story
Country Cottage is a dream come true for founder Peter Rudis. As a young boy growing up in Massachusetts, he has fond memories of going hunting for treasures with his grandfather, to fill his antique store on Park Street in Lawrence, MA. Peter always wanted to open a furniture store that would recreate that warm, homey, nostalgic feeling that he felt at grampa's store, a place where people could again find heirloom-quality furniture at a fair price, nice enough to pass down to future generations.
In 2003 it was time. After looking all over the State of New Hampshire for a simple pine bookcase for a birthday gift for his wife Donna, he ended up frustrated with the selection available and built one himself. It then dawned on him there was a great need for simple, smaller sized, fair priced furniture in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Together with his wife Donna, son Jon, and managing partner Kim leading our awesome team, they've created a cozy and happy store that isn't quite as little as it started out! Some of our customers comment that this is their favorite store, and could spend all day here. We think it's because of the welcoming atmosphere created here, building lasting friendships with customers and taking pride in the work at hand.
"There are no strangers, only friends you haven't met yet."
A Relaxing Shopping Experience
Unlike many furniture stores, our team doesn't work on commission so you won’t feel pressured to buy. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t willing to help! We will provide as little or as much assistance in selecting your furniture as you want. Because we work as a team, you get the benefit of all of our skill sets – in design, finishing, and product selection.
🇺🇸 Made in the USA is Our Specialty! 🇺🇸
Most of the furniture in our store is made in America by craftsmen and women from New Hampshire, Maine, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, and other states. We do also carry some imports (real wood only!), when it makes sense, so you will always find the best combination of quality and value.
Custom, Quality, and VALUE
With unfinished furniture, you can see what level of quality you are getting. You know you are getting real wood. Many factory-finished pieces these days are combinations of real wood and chip board. It can be really hard to tell the difference when shopping, but you’ll know later on, when the furniture falls apart.
Here you can choose from hundreds of finish options and put our local pros to work finishing your selections for you in-house. Or pocket the extra cash and do it yourself! We think you'll find that finishing furniture is a relaxing and enjoyable hobby! It's great for gift giving, too.
